How to Check Your Insurance Policy for Lock Requirements
☝Find the Security Section – Look for headings like “Minimum Security Standards” or “Locks.👆Check for Specific Wording – Does it say BS3621? TS007? Or just “approved locks”?
🙏Look for Door Type Details – Wooden doors often require BS3621; uPVC/composite doors may need multi-point locks.
😐Don’t Forget Windows – Many policies require key-operated locks on accessible windows.

What is Contents Insurance?
Contents insurance provides insurance cover on your possession and valuables within your property - whether owned or rented. The level of cover will be set out in your policy documentation. Contents insurance is usually renewed annually and paid on renewal or in monthly installments.
What is BS3621 or TS007?
There are locks that are officially tested to a specific standard which can include the following tests / checks;
- A minimum of five levers (for lever-operated mortice locks)
- Anti-picking mechanisms
- Drill-resistant plates or rollers
- A bolt throw of at least 20mm into the door frame
- Keyed egress—a key is required to open the lock from both sides
As tenant do I need Contents Insurance?
Legally you do not need Contents Insurance but is generally recommended.
